NHCSL President Speaks to South Carolina’s Hispanic Leaders

Columbia, S.C. – Today, at a Hispanic Heritage Month Luncheon held by the South Carolina Hispanic Leadership Council (SCHLC), Assemblyman Felix Ortiz (NY), President of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL), encouraged the audience of more than 200 to continue their work to empower the Hispanic youth of their communities.

Participants at the gathering included representatives from community organizations, labor and business community, religious groups, student organizations, environmental, health and community development groups.

Edgar Medina, who serves as Board President of the SCHLC stated, “We are honored to have yet another successful Hispanic Heritage Month luncheon with many of our friends. This year it was even more special, thanks to our guest speaker, Assemblyman Felix W. Ortiz.”

In his remarks Assemblyman Ortiz highlighted NHCSL’s efforts to address the health and education disparities that the youth of the Hispanic community face. He asked that the members of the South Carolina Hispanic Leadership Council continue their efforts in involving the Hispanic youth of their communities in political activism.

“As leaders, it is our duty to cultivate the next generation of Hispanic leaders. We need to impress upon our youth the importance of political involvement and the positive impact that they can have on their community through their participation in the policy-making process,” stated Ortiz.
