According to a recent report conducted by the Pew Hispanic Center, the fast growth of the Hispanic population in the United States will assure their influence in the upcoming presidential elections. Hispanics have been participating strongly in the primary elections which will end next week. Most forecasts predict that Hispanics will represent a growing percentage of the overall vote in the general elections this fall. Susan Minushkin, from the Pew Hispanic Center stated that “this is about a young generation and an aging one, there is a demographic impact with more Hispanics reaching a voting age” she said.

The Hispanic community’s primary interests are the economic crises, health and education, in addition to immigration. Hispanics had the largest percentage of participation among all minorities during the primary election.
It is anticipated that the Latino vote’s influence will be felt in November, because Hispanics are a key constituency group and will play a big role during the upcoming elections, said Minushkin. There are high percentages of Hispanics living in states such as New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and Florida, states that could define the presidential outcomes.

“Ya es hora: ¡Ciudadania!”

“Ya es hora: ¡Ciudadania!” is a historic and comprehensive civic participation campaign that was launched as a community response to the pro-immigrant mobilizations of 2006. The campaign represents the largest coordinated effort to incorporate Latinos as full participants in the American political process. This campaign is headed by The NALEO Educational Fund, the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), Service Employees International Union (SEIU), We Are America Alliance, and unions dedicated to increasing civic participation by immigrants. Univision Communications Inc. is leading the television and radio efforts to motivate legal permanent residents to apply for U.S. citizenship. Unlike past approaches, which focused on naturalization, voter registration, or get-out-the-vote drives, this campaign seeks to integrate all these components into a comprehensive civic engagement strategy and under a recognizable action-oriented slogan: ya es hora, which translates to “now is the time”.
